It's hard to read anything in 2026 without tripping over a claim that AI will transform manufacturing overnight. The reality on the floor is more measured, and frankly more interesting. The biggest gains we're seeing aren't from replacing people with intelligent machines — they're from giving existing systems better judgment.


Consider predictive maintenance. A vibration sensor has been able to detect a failing bearing for years, but the value comes from a model that learns the difference between normal wear and an impending failure across thousands of hours of operation. That's where modern AI earns its place: in the unglamorous middle, turning raw signal into a decision an operator can act on before a line goes down.

The same pattern holds for quality inspection, where vision models now catch defects that slip past both human eyes and rigid rule-based systems, and for scheduling, where reinforcement-learning approaches squeeze real throughput out of constraints that used to be managed by gut feel. None of this is magic. It's careful integration, good data, and a willingness to start small.

Our advice heading deeper into 2026 is to resist the urge to boil the ocean. Pick one process where bad decisions cost you real money, instrument it well, and let a focused model prove its worth.
